Etymology:
"Prehendere," the Latin ancestor of "comprehend," means "to seize." When you comprehend something you seize or grasp its meaning in your mind. In addition to "comprehend," "prehendere" also gave English a number of words that often involve a more physical kind of seizing or holding. For instance, "apprehend"; when the police seize suspected criminals, they "apprehend" them. "Prison," a place where convicted criminals are held, is another descendant of "prehendere."
